At 101 Years Old, Leila Caroline Rose Parks Reveals the Secret to Longevity: The Power of Golf
Secret to Longevity

In a recent debate on the health benefits of walking versus playing golf, an article from the Scottish Daily Mail (6 Nov 2023) has shed light on an important aspect often overlooked: the significant mental and physical health benefits that come from playing a game of golf. This insight is particularly relevant as we reflect on the life and wisdom of our beloved Leila Caroline Rose Parks (1922-2023), the former ladies' captain of Perivale Park Golf Club in the 1970s.

Leila, who sadly passed away at the age of 101, was an embodiment of the positive impact golf can have on one’s health and longevity. During our annual Captain’s Day in 2022, when asked about the secret to her long life, Leila attributed her reaching the remarkable age of 101 to her love for playing golf. This noteworthy testament was featured in the Ealing News on 29th September 2023.

Perivale Park Golf Club had the honour of reconnecting with Leila in 2021, and we were delighted to invite her and her carer to join our club events. The care home shared how much she enjoyed this interaction and the joy and memories it brought back as she celebrated her centenary year.

Leila’s story is not just a heartwarming tale from our club’s history; it is a powerful example of how golf can enrich lives physically, mentally, and socially. It's a narrative that contradicts the notion promoted by Ealing Council that walking alone suffices for physical exercise. Golf, as Leila’s life beautifully demonstrated, offers a more comprehensive approach to health, combining physical activity with mental engagement and social interaction.

As we remember Leila Caroline Rose Parks, we also reiterate the importance of Perivale Park Golf Club in the lives of our members and community. It’s where health is nurtured, friendships are formed, and memories are cherished.

Following the inspiring example set by Leila, let’s continue to champion the cause of keeping our golf course open, not just as a sports facility but as a haven for health and well-being.
